Legendary Heroines of Indian Cinema

Six legendary heroines of Indian cinema – Savithri, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Devika Rani, Leela Naidu and Kanan Devi – were recognized by the Indian Postal Department by releasing a stamp in their honor on February 13th, 2011 at Hotel Imperial in New Delhi.Noted actress Vyjayanthimala Bali, Gurudas Kamat and Radhika Doraisamy were on dais while the stamps were released. Vijayasamundeeswari, daughter of late Savithri was present along with her entire family including her husband, sons and grandson to receive the honor on behalf of her mother.  It may be mentioned here that the postal department had earlier issued a stamp in honor of Nargis and Madhubala.

The demographics of India are remarkably diverse.India is the second most populous country in the world, with over 1.18 billion people (estimate for April, 2010), more than a sixth of the world's population.Already containing 17.31% of the world's population, India is projected to be the world's most populous country by 2025, surpassing China,its population exceeding 1.6 billion people by 2050.India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% hovers below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years,compared to 37 for China and 48 for Japan; and, by 2030, India's dependency ratio should be just over 0.4.

V.Subbiah-Freedom Fighter,Leader

V Subbiah is considered as doyen of the trade unionist movement in Puducherry(Pondicherry), He is a veteran Communist leader and freedom fighter. Subbiah started his political career as a supporter of the Indian National Congress. A great orator, he mobilized the student and labor communities against the French rule in the Union Territory and was also imprisoned several times for his efforts in organising anti-French and anti-British protests.The greatness of Subbiah was the fact that he was sensitive towards the poor and the marginalized in society. Constant harassment by the French rulers did not affect his determination and he emerged above petty politics in the struggle for freedom. V.Narayanasamy (Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs ) released a commemorative Indian stamp on 7th Feb 2011 to mark the birth centenary of veteran Communist leader and freedom fighter V. Subbiah.

Mary Ward (23 January 1585 – 30 January 1645) was an English Catholic nun who founded the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as the Loreto Sisters (not to be confused with the Sisters of Loreto). She was declared "Venerable" by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 December 2009.

Ranbir Singh Hooda is well known in Haryana's Jat heartland for his role in India's freedom struggle as a leading member of the Indian National Congress.Born on November 26,1914,in the house of Matu Ram in Sanghi village Rohtak district,Hooda studied at Vaish High School, Rohtak, Government College,Rohtak and Ramjas College,Delhi from where he graduated in early thirties.He was imprisoned four times for participating in nationalist movements.Taking a greater interest in education,he founded Subash High School at Kharkhande and primary schools in villages of Munger Bilbilan and Polangi.He also started a weekly called the Hindi Haryana and headed the Haryana Vidya Parcharani Sabha at Rohtak.He was a minister in the Punjab Government for a number of years.At the time of his death,he was the president of All India Freedom Fighter Organization.His another notable contribution included the role he played in development of Bakhra Nangal Power Project as the then Irrigation Minister of joint Punjab.His son,Ch.Bhupinder Singh Hooda,is the current Chief Minister of Haryana and his grandson Shri Deepender Hooda is the M.P.from Rohtak.Hooda, a member of the first Constituent Assembly that framed the Indian Constitution died aged 94, on February 1, 2009, after a long illness.
